Purpose of Satunaigawa Dam
Controlling the flow of water
The dam secures the necessary volume of water in areas downstream and supplies enough water to maintain water quality and allow animals and plants to survive.
Maintenance of River Discharge
he dam can retain 580m3/s of a flood discharge of 700m3/s(the volume of water that accumulates during a flood once every hundred years on average) to protect areas along the Satsunaigawa River and along the mid-and downstream sections of the Tokachigawa River.
Water Supply for Water Service
Waterworks companies in the central area of Tokachi have access to 100,200m3 of water a day downstream of the dam. The waterworks companies supply water to Obihiro City, the towns of Otofuke, Makubetsu, Memuro, and Ikeda, and the villages of Naka-satsunai and Sarabetsu.
Water Supply for Irrigation
The area along the Satsunaigawa River is one of the largest area of farmland in Hokkaido. The Satsunaigawa Dam allows the irrigation of 20,300ha of farmland, ensuring that farmers along the river can achieve stable agricultural management.
Generation of Electric Power
The dam can produce up to 8,000kW of hydroelectric power.
