Peatland
Peatland
Kushiro Wetland is covered with peat layers, and the central area has remained largely undeveloped and in its natural state.
Peat layers are distributed throughout the wetland, with a thickness of about 5 m in the central area and 1–2 m in the surrounding areas.
The cross-sectional geological map shows that peat forms the surface layer, underlain by a gravel layer and an impermeable clay layer.
