Numaoro, Old Channel Restoration 2
Restoration Site 2 : Numaoro, Old Channel Restoration 2
The second river channel restoration project was completed in the spring of 2025. At a site on the Numaoro River, a tributary of the Kushiro River, the river flow was diverted into the old meandering channel.
Like the Kushiro River, the Numaoro River was also straightened in the 1970s and 1980s. The straightened channel created a poor habitat, characterized by a wide riverbed and shallow water depth.
Before Restoration 6/22/2018 The original meandering channel had remained alongside the straightened channel. The restoration work was carried out to divert the flow from the straightened channel back to the original meandering channel. As a result, the river landscape was restored to a more natural state.
